Inclusive Design: Design for 7 billion, design for one (w/ Sarah Morris)

Human diversity -- Is it a strength to product design or an obstacle to be mitigated? When creating products and services, businesses constantly face a critical question: Can one product be meaningful to billions of people? Human beings have been at the center of design practices for a long time, yet technology is poor at adapting to their unique needs.

Join Sarah Morris from Microsoft’s inclusive design team for an interactive hour exploring how designing for human diversity can unlock more meaningful experiences for each of us, and result in better technologies for all of us.

The Politics of Navigation with Stuart Maxwell

Join the July Seattle Information Architecture and User Experience (IA/UX) Meetup as Stuart Maxwell discusses the politics of navigation!

FROM STUART
For years, REI.com's global navigation existed in a relatively stable equilibrium. It balanced the need to sell products and services, provide access to educational content, and inform visitors about unique aspects of the company. But a recent agency-led redesign threatened to disrupt this stability. Suddenly, a whole host of assumptions around the proper role of site-wide navigation were exposed. As REI's in-house IA, I had a front row seat to watch merchants, marketers, designers, and business managers wrangle over their competing expectations of REI's global nav. My job was to influence opinion and try to restore a healthy balance in the navigation while still supporting a new design direction for the site.

This talk will be a case study of the unexpected political struggles that were revealed during the design process. I'll attempt to fairly portray the full range of perspectives on global navigation, from customers to business owners, from agency designers to in-house designers, from accepted practice to emerging trends. I'll talk as candidly as I can about the discussions that took place throughout the redesign process, and where we landed on some fundamental questions about navigation: Who should we design for? Who should care about the global nav? And, particularly, what is IA's role in the creative process? In short, when politics enter the design studio, who wins?

Wearable 3.0 Talk Austen Angell presented by IDSA

  • Zworykin Ave Beaverton, OR, 97005 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Charles Austen Angell, Founder and CEO, Modern Edge will be giving a talk on “Wearable 3.0″ Abstract:

Wearable technologies were originally envisioned as embedded electronics in consumer apparel, but instead developed into standalone accessories for health and fitness tracking, communication, and productivity. This talk argues that wearables are going back into apparel at significant consumer scale. Catalysts for the shift include improved battery chemistries, small, cheap components, and improved wireless networking protocols, as well as strategic consumer use cases driven by the apparel industry. Apparel integrated wearables will be invisible to the user and designed into garments so that their function and experience is in line with the aesthetics and consumer experience focus from clothing makers. Some examples will be discussed including use cases that enable or enhance positive social communication among adolescents.

UX in Automobiles: Balancing effective UI design & driver safety

The IA/UX Meetup, hosted this month by AIGA Seattle, welcomes Jake Zukowski, Associate Creative Director at frog, for a talk on automobile UX design.

Complex interfaces have become a common feature in consumer automobiles. As these systems functionality has expanded, drivers ability to interact with so much information has grown more demanding. At this stage automotive UX design is in it's awkward adolescence phase, but going forward how will designers ensure motorists can accomplish tasks while increasing driving safety?

This talk will demonstrate successful (and not-so-successful) ways that in-car designs currently happen and what we all need to be aware of in the future to create beautiful, useful designs to keep drivers informed and safe simultaneously.

Coding for Beginners: HTML and CSS

General Assembly hosts Judah Stevenson for a one night crash course on HTML and CSS.

"HTML and CSS are the fundamental building blocks of the web. Whether you're a beginner who wants to get started in web development, a designer looking to hand-code your concepts, or a marketer who wants a little more control over their CMS, you'll need to know HTML and CSS to get the job done.

This session, designed for the beginner programmer, will assume no previous coding knowledge. You'll go over key coding terminology and principles, introduce languages like HTML and CSS—what their functions are, how they work together—and use that new knowledge to write our own code."
