Kick-ass Brainstorming, Improvisation Techniques for Designers

Join us for a brainstorming session with Kat Davis of Frog, to learn the basics of support, teamwork, and the generative flow of ideas that will make you a better designer! Kat will lead us through the basics of "yes and" and supporting each other and will address how to apply these principles in real world situations. ABOUT KAT DAVIS
Kat Davis is an interaction designer at frog. She has worked with a variety of Fortune 100 companies, start ups, government agencies and NGOs on projects ranging from talent management software to new product development. Kat is a passionate teacher of design to both current and aspiring designers. She has led workshops at IxDA '15, IxDA South America, and UNICEF. She has also taught UX design at General Assembly in Seattle. When not designing, Kat moonlights as an improvisational comedian.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

We are in the age of the mashup. People are seamlessly weaving together elements from multiple distinct sources to produce fresh and unexpected results in video, music, dance, and even food. In this workshop, you will explore the meaning and impact of the mashup through hands-on, group exercises and discuss how this approach can help uncover compelling and surprising solutions.

Through the lens of bricolage, you will be challenged to disrupt established design methodologies by taking a new perspective to themes such as time, movement, and layering while anchoring core ideas in real-world scenarios.

Students, professionals and design enthusiasts are encouraged to attend. No advanced knowledge or preparation is required.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Jenny Kam designs for natural user interfaces (NUI) incubation and Kinect for Windows at Microsoft, where she also consults with clients to create exclusive Kinect-driven retail and fitness experiences. She advocates “appropriate design” that leverages empirical data to craft compelling frameworks for a range of technologies.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

The Artefact behavior change workshop will show you how to design products and services that nudge people toward positive behavior change, producing outcomes that benefit end-users and their communities. For example, how can we encourage people to exercise or use public transportation more often? 

In this hands-on session, we'll introduce attendees to key concepts in behavioral economics and cognitive psychology to help them understand the often surprising factors that influence human behavior and decision-making. Using a series of engaging and thought-provoking exercises, as well as Artefact’s Behavior Change Strategy Cards, we'll help participants analyze a current problem or design challenge through the lens of behavior change and lead them to generate new solutions.

Students, professionals and design enthusiasts are encouraged to attend. No advanced knowledge or preparation is required.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

 

Lada Gorlenko is a UX strategy expert at Artefact, an award-winning technology design and innovation company. Lada has nearly two decades of experience in research, consulting, product, and professional development. She possesses deep knowledge in cross-cultural communication, management training, UX design, technology and product lifecycle research for a number of public and private ventures, including the European Commission, British Telecom, IBM and Microsoft.

Lada is passionate about helping colleagues and clients from different disciplines understand and appreciate the value of great user experiences. She is a co-founding Director of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA) and served on its first executive committee.

(People Magazine), Condé Nast (Epicurious, The New Yorker), Facebook, Zynga, Clearwire, AT&T, Starbucks, and Ritani. In 2008 Matt founded Fell Swoop where he leads project teams in designing innovative yet pragmatic design solutions that help clients realize bottom line results.

Bobby Hughes: Design Thinking Workshop

Bobby Hughes, award-winning designer, educator and consultant, teaches this full day workshop on how the design process can be used to make great experiences that promote learning and cultivate lasting, positive change. Inspired by Franz von Stuck’s “total work of art” ethos, participants in this hands-on workshop will tackle a local design challenge in teams. Learning how to apply design thinking, a process-based approach to problem solving that combines empathy and creativity, participants address messy, world-sized problems through innovation and collaboration.
